As a young, emerging artist, I' started painting in September of 2022. Since then I have been honing my craft, carving out a space for myself in the vibrant Michigan art scene. My journey in art started much earlier, nurtured from a young age as I assisted my mother, a skilled fine artist, during her art residency at the Van Gogh Immersive Detroit. That six-week residency was more than just an assistantship for me; it was my first encounter with live painting and working with Van Gogh's color palette, an experience that left a profound influence on my work.
In just a short span of time, I've achieved some notable milestones. I've sold five pieces of my work, and several others have found homes with Michigan art collectors and gallerists. My first group exhibition at the Riverside Arts Center in Ypsilanti, Michigan was an enriching experience, marking the beginning of many more to come. I'm proud to be a member of the Detroit Fine Arts Breakfast Club and the Ypsi Fine Arts Club, communities that continue to nourish my artistic journey.
My artistic pursuits coexist harmoniously with my academic achievements. As a dedicated student of Interior Design at Eastern Michigan University, I've found myself on the Dean's list multiple times. My journey is a testament to a combination of artistic talent, passion, and dedication. With every passing day, I continue to grow, to explore, to create - making my mark in the art world, one stroke at a time.
As an artist, I find my home in the world of acrylics, where I focus on bringing to life evocative portraits of black women. My work is about more than just representation - it's about highlighting and celebrating our beauty, our unique features, and our strength. I find myself heavily influenced by my time working with the Van Gogh color palette. It's inspired me to paint with a certain richness and vibrancy that brings my subjects to life.
The way I apply my acrylics, bold and expressive, is a reflection of Van Gogh's deep influence on my artistic journey. Each portrait I create carries a piece of my soul, as well as the soul of the woman I'm portraying. In this dance of color and emotion, I'm able to create pieces that are not only visually captivating but are filled with depth and commentary on black womanhood.
With every portrait, I aim to show the individuality and captivating uniqueness of each woman I paint, rejecting the generic in favor of personal and profound. My understanding of acrylics, its depth of color, and the versatility it offers, fuels my artistic vision. It allows me to create pieces that are not just aesthetically pleasing, but also thought-provoking and emotionally resonant. My passion for my medium and my subjects continues to drive me forward, creating art that is as compelling as it is visually stunning.
As an artist, my wellspring of inspiration has been as diverse as it is deeply personal. One of the earliest and most profound influences on my work was my own exposure to the art world as a child, thanks to my mother's career in fine art. I spent many hours modeling as a subject for her fine art photography, a rich experience that instilled in me a sense of the infinite possibility and expressive power of art.
It's the inherent peace I find in capturing and showcasing the wide range of emotions experienced by black women that truly inspires my work. Each stroke of my brush, every nuance of color and shadow is a tribute to our strength, our resilience, our joy, and even our sorrow. I see each of my portraits as an opportunity to offer a visual narrative that underscores the multi-faceted depth and complexity of our experiences.
Moreover, I draw immense inspiration from my fellow artists at the Detroit Fine Arts Breakfast Club. Our collective energy, shared passion for art, and the synergistic exchange of ideas, techniques, and critiques, constantly stoke the flames of my creativity. This vibrant community, this 'village' of artists, serves as a constant reminder that art is a communal endeavor, that we grow and thrive not in isolation, but through the inspiration and encouragement we draw from each other. It is this rich tapestry of personal experiences, deep emotional connection, and communal support that shapes and propels my artistic journey.
